We outgrew a few things this year, starting with our name. What was once a scrappy little company in New York is now a scrappy not-so-little company thanks to the advanced medical and technological assets we've acquired courtesy of an expanded relationship with our partners at Cryos, one of the world's largest sperm banks. We've added new lab technicians, a new medical director and a new tissue bank director. We've also expanded our medical advisory committee, to keep us abreast of the latest developments coming from regulators like the Food & Drug Administration. What about our new name, anyway? Cryos is a Greek word, meaning cold. In our case, incredibly cold: minus 321 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s the temperature inside the liquid nitrogen-filled storage tanks where Cryos sperm donations are kept before use. Studies have shown that this method of sperm storage can keep sperm happy, healthy and potent for many years. We’re Scandinavian. And then some. We started in Denmark back in 1987, and we now offer a deep, broad selection of Scandinavian donors from our facilities in New York. We've also begun building an American-based, multi-ethnic donor recruitment program to augment our stocks of Scandinavian donors. Our customers are a very, very eclectic bunch: tall couples, short couples, short/tall couples, pairings of all kinds—from Bulgarian-Irish to Danish-Senegalese to Japanese-Italian. We hear from straight couples, gay couples and lesbian couples with one thing in common: they’ve had trouble conceiving, one way or another, and we help them to have children. As we say in Denmark, Er der vilje er der vej, Love will find a way. Helping couples challenged by fertility issues is a common motivation among the donors we accept. Scandinavian culture values intelligence as well as altruism, and most of our donors are in graduate programs at major Scandinavian universities. What’s special about our sperm bank? Like other sperm banks, we offer clients in-depth donor profiles and photo matching. But we also offer the reassurance of a donor screening and testing regime so strict, only 8% of applicants are accepted into our program. We test them and their donations, repeatedly, for as long as they are in our program.
