Complete anamnesis (specifically regarding possible heritable conditions) is recorded, and the data are entered in a registry of donors. In addition to the repeated health testing, we build meticulous files about donor characteristics like eye color, color of hair, height, weight, type of build, race, peculiarities of appearance (e.g. complexion), psychological profile, age, education/occupation and blood group. Every donor is examined and given final approval by our senior medical staff and management.

The semen donations stay frozen in quarantine for at least six months. Once every three months after that, and for as long as we offer a donor, he is re-tested for the sexually transmitted diseases HIV-I and -II, syphilis (WR), gonorrhea (GC), hepatitis B and C and chlamydia.

The testing and recordkeeping procedures are updated continuously, to conform with the changing requirements of the governments and health organizations that supervise the industry. We meet the requirements of the Food and Drug Administration, California Tissue Bank Licensing, Maryland Department of Health, Danish Ministry of Health, New York State Department of Health and The American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

A word about CMV .
pinkboxCytomegalovirus is a flu-like illness experienced at one time or another by about half of the human population. If you’ve had it, you’ll carry the antibodies. If you haven’t had it, the risk of acquiring a CMV infection from one of our sperm donors is quite low, though not impossible. Further, donor sperm is filtered (‘washed’ is the scientific term) in a way that removes almost all white blood cells, and this is thought to reduce the risk even more. You should consult with your physician regarding your own CMV status and the implications for your pregnancy.

Our donors are young men from a broad spectrum of Scandinavian society. Many are students at universities. We subject these potential donors to a screening and testing regime so strict that only 8% of applicants are accepted into our program.

Our interviews are thorough, and start with questioning about personal health and sexual histories. Family health histories are explored, going back three generations, and we look closely at a candidate’s motivation for becoming a sperm donor.

Donors must be willing to renounce all paternal rights, and anonymity is guaranteed.

During this process, and at intervals for as long as we offer a given donor, our donors are tested for chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea and for antibodies against HIV-I and -II, HTLV-I and -II as well as hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis C (anti-HCV). Blood group (ABO) and karyotyping (46, XY) are also noted. Each donor is screened and tested for cystic fibrosis. It is not possible to completely eliminate the risk of cystic fibrosis, but the tests performed substantially reduce the likelihood of the donor being a carrier of cystic fibrosis.

In specific situations, usually in response to client requests, we carry out tests for other heritable diseases like sickle cell disease, thalassemia, and Tay Sachs.
